THE UPMC SCHOOL OF CARDIOVASCULAR PERFUSION
As an integral member of the cardiovascular team, perfusionists utilize various cardiopulmonary bypass systems and other technologies to maintain the health of patients both during and after surgery. As health care technology has evolved at rapid pace over the years, the scope of practice of the perfusionist has evolved along with it. There is a high demand for the expertise of qualified clinical perfusionists in the healthcare industry.
UPMC Procirca and Carlow University have expanded our longstanding perfusion education partnership to create a Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion program designed to address the growing demand for highly skilled perfusionists in today’s healthcare environment. Through a consortium sponsorship model, UPMC Procirca and Carlow University serve as Co-Sponsors of the CAAHEP-accredited ‘Carlow University and UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Cardiovascular Perfusion Program’, which prepares graduates to earn a Master of Science in Cardiovascular Perfusion degree, issued by Carlow University.
During training at UPMC, students work closely with Procirca perfusionists and benefit from their extensive experience. By maintaining the highest level of patient care and didactic instruction, the program provides students with optimum learning opportunities and a broad spectrum of professional training in clinical perfusion. Program graduates are eligible to sit for part one of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion’s professional examination process and are employed as qualified perfusionists at hospitals not only around the country, but around the world. examination process and are employed as qualified perfusionists at hospitals not only around the country, but around the world.
